Dry ice jet medium dry ice particles accelerate in high-pressure air flow and impact the surface to be cleaned. The unique feature of dry ice cleaning is that dry ice particles vaporize at the moment of impact. The momentum of dry ice particles disappears at the moment of impact. Rapid heat exchange occurs between dry ice particles and the cleaned surface. This causes the solid CO2 to sublimate rapidly and become a gas. Dry ice particles expand nearly 800 times in volume in a few thousandths of a second, resulting in a "micro explosion" at the impact point. Due to the volatilization of CO2, the dry ice cleaning process does not produce any secondary waste, leaving only the dirt to be collected and cleaned.

Unlike other jet media, the temperature of dry ice particles is very low (- 78 ℃). Such low temperature makes dry ice cleaning have unique thermodynamic properties and affect the mechanical properties of adhering dirt. Thermal shock occurs due to the temperature difference between the dry ice particles and the cleaning surface. When the temperature of the material decreases and the brittleness increases, the dry ice particles can impact and break the dirt layer.
